At Broadgate Farm you're in the heart of Yorkshire's Nature Triangle and ideally placed to enjoy local wildlife right on our doorstep: perfect for a wildlife break!

From barn owls around the farm to otters in the local rivers, or the charismatic puffin in the 'seabird cities' of Flamborough & Bempton - there's plenty to fill your day from those who love Springwatch to keen enthusiasts.

Here's a taste of the wild Wolds....

On our doorstep - Speedy swallows call the farm home all summer and their liquid calls make the perfect soundtrack to a warm evening barbeque. In the fields barn owls patrol the hedgerows all year round on silent wings - look out for them at dawn and dusk. Buzzards circle high on warm thermals and the occasional sight of a red kite with its shimmering rust-red wings and forked tail is unmistakeable.

Just down the road the reserve at North Cave Wetlands boasts a grand viewing and picnic area, and is a summer home to the exquisite avocet, kingfishers and dragonflies. In winter the pools come alive with thousands of colourful wildfowl including wigeon, teal and pintail - always under the watchful eye of harriers and peregrine falcons.

As you head to the coast the expansive wetlands of Tophill Low are one of the most reliable areas in the region for spotting otters and water voles. In summer orchids colour the pathways and terns nest raucously on the specially created islands. Ospreys often drop in for a spot of fishing in spring and autumn.

Seabird Cities - jostling for position at Bempton and Flamborough Cliffs, puffins can be carefully picked out among 250,000 guillemots, kittiwakes, razorbills and England's only mainland gannetry at Bempton from April to August. Local boat trips can give you a seal's eye view of the action below the 400ft cliffs, where gannets dive at an impressive 70mph.

If it is the underwater world that facinates then the Living Seas Centre can kick start your exploration of the shoreline with rock pooling tips and regular 'seashore safaris'.

Yorkshire's Land's End - jutting 3½ miles into the North Sea Spurn Point is like nowhere else in northern England. A rich history of lost medieval villages, wartimes exploits and the constant challenge of Mother Nature make this a remarkable wilderness-like place. Take the low-tide walk to a newly restored 128ft lighthouse or an organised 4x4 safari. Such an unusual location in the landscape means that spring and autumn sees a rush of wildlife migrations bringing in birds and insects from around the globe.

We are accredited and hold the Puffin Mark which means that we have lots of information for you about wildlife in the area and we have ensured that we have done everything we can to encourage wildlife around the cottages.
